This Sam Newton Florida Highwaymen piece is just one of the many excellent pieces in our gallery here at Gannon’s Antiques & Art. This is a particularly nice piece that personifies the Florida Highwaymen genre that Sam Newton was a part of. Inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame on March 24, 2004. This beautiful Florida beach landscape scene measures about 27″ X 19 ″ and is certain to be a highlight in any advanced collection. We also buy Florida Highwaymen pieces and offer free fine art appraisals.
The original version of this piece, sculpted in the late 19th century, graces a small street in Brussels, Belgium. The subject is that of a nature sprite, a girl with butterfly wings wearing a long tunic that hides her lower limbs. Fairy imagery was fashionable in 19th century art as it allowed the partially draped female figure to be displayed openly in communities where local sensibilities might have condemned a nude as inappropriate for public it. This sculpture has a sister piece located in Sarasota and is titled "Butterfly Lady".
These are some photographs of Brenda Berdnik’s section in our Art Gallery. You can see her work and other pieces of fine one of kind art on display in our showroom.
